Covid-19 forces cancellation of 2020 V8 Superboats season

With a surge in Covid-19 cases in Victoria and New South Wales, the committee of the Australian Formula Jet Sprint Association have made the tough decision to cancel the remainder of the 2020 season.

Citing challenges with border closures and the ongoing pandemic, the difficult decision was made to close the 2020 Penrite Australian Championships after just the season opener at Temora back in late February, and focus instead on a return to competition in 2021.

“None of us wanted to hear that, but the safety of everyone involved was our prime concern, and with state and federal governments battling to contain the pandemic, we really had no choice,” committee representative Justin Roylance explained.

“We have spoken to a number of stakeholders and canvassed all the teams, but the reality was there was no guarantee that the current Victorian lockdown won’t expand to include other states and extend through towards the end of the year.

“That said, should an opportunity arise to campaign some ‘club’ events at circuits like Temora and Cabarita, we will judge them on their merits, but only after we have the all clear from the relevant authorities, but until then it’s all speculation.

“We’d like to thank the fans and our great partner Penrite for sticking by us – they’ve committed to supporting us again in 2021 which is great news off the back of the recent setbacks – and to our teams for working with us as we looked at the various options, but as it turned out, the decision was effectively made for us.

“The committee will now focus on the 2021 season, and what opportunities there might be for this year, with any updates revealed on our website and through our social media channels.”
